place, location, position
1. place, location, position A physical location, spot, or designated area. This is the dominant sense of 'topos' in the NT, covering all ninety-four occurrences which refer to geographic places, positions, or spaces. The multilingual evidence is highly consistent across both original clusters: Spanish 'lugar/lugares,' Hindi 'sthan/jagah/sthanon,' Arabic 'makan/amakina,' Korean 'got/jangso,' Swahili 'mahali/nafasi/sehemu.' The two clusters differ only in grammatical number—singular forms (AMS, NMS, GMS, DMS) vs plural forms (GMP, AMP, DMP). The semantic range includes specific named places, generic locations, spatial positions, and metaphorical 'room/opportunity' (as in 'give place to wrath'), but the core meaning of a defined spatial location unifies all occurrences. 94×
