mouth, oral opening
1. mouth, oral opening The physical mouth as an organ of speech, eating, or expression, and by metonymy the words or testimony that proceed from it. This is the overwhelmingly dominant NT sense, encompassing every occurrence of stoma. It includes the mouth as organ of speech (Matt 5:2, 12:34, 13:35, Luke 1:64, 1:70, 4:22, 6:45), the mouth of witnesses for testimony (Matt 18:16), the mouth of animals (Matt 17:27), the mouths of prophets and saints (Heb 11:33-34), the mouths of horses (Jas 3:3), and the mouths of apocalyptic creatures (Rev 9:17-18). The 'edge' of the sword (Luke 21:24, Heb 11:34) is literally 'mouth of sword' in Greek idiom. Confessing with the mouth (Rom 10:10) uses the same physical organ metaphorically for verbal declaration. All clusters represent the same fundamental sense with only case, number, or contextual variation. 78×
