crown, wreath
1. crown, wreath A woven wreath or circlet (στέφανος) placed on the head as a mark of honor, victory, or royal dignity, used in both singular ('a crown') and plural ('crowns') forms. In the NT this encompasses the crown of thorns placed on Jesus (John 19:2, Matthew 27:29), the imperishable crown of the Christian athlete (1 Corinthians 9:25), the crown of life (James 1:12, Revelation 2:10), the crown of righteousness (2 Timothy 4:8), and the golden crowns of the twenty-four elders (Revelation 4:4, 10). Multilingual evidence is uniform across number: Arabic إِكْلِيل/أَكاليل (iklīl/akālīl), Korean 면류관/관들, Swahili taji, Hindi मुकुट/मुकुटों, Spanish corona/coronas. Singular and plural are grammatical inflection of one sense. 18×
