cohort, military band
1. cohort, military band A Roman military unit (σπεῖρα), typically a cohort of about 600 soldiers, used in NT contexts describing the soldiers involved in Jesus's arrest and trial and those under various centurions. All cases (nominative, accusative, genitive) refer to the same military unit concept. Multilingual evidence is uniform: Arabic كَتِيبَة (katība, 'battalion/brigade'), Korean 부대/군대/대대 ('unit/army/battalion'), Swahili kikosi ('detachment/squad'), Spanish cohorte, Hindi पलटन (palṭan, 'platoon'). The genitive 'of the cohort' is merely possessive inflection, not a separate sense.
