1. dwell, inhabit — To dwell in, inhabit, or reside in a place or person; used of both physical cohabitation and spiritual/metaphysical indwelling. Paul uses it prominently in Romans 7-8 for indwelling sin ('sin dwelling in me', Rom 7:17, 20 oikousa) and the Holy Spirit ('if the Spirit of God dwells in you', Rom 8:9, 11 oikei). In 1 Cor 3:16 he asks 'do you not know that the Spirit of God dwells in you?' (oikei). In 1 Tim 6:16 God 'dwells in unapproachable light' (oikon). The physical-cohabitation sense appears in 1 Cor 7:12-13 where a believing spouse's unbelieving partner 'consents to live with' (oikein) them. Cross-linguistically uniform across all uses: deu 'wohnen' (to dwell), fra 'habiter' (to inhabit), arb 'yaskun' (to reside), heb 'shokhen' (to dwell, for spiritual indwelling) / 'lagur' (to sojourn, for spousal cohabitation), hin 'nivas/vas karta hai' (takes up dwelling) / 'rahne' (to live), kor 'geohaji' (to dwell) / 'salgi' (to live). The Greek verb itself carries a single sense of habitation; the spiritual vs. physical dimension derives from context and subject, not from distinct lexical senses. 9×
