Anastrophe in classical Greek meant 'turning back' or 'overthrow,' but by the Hellenistic period it had narrowed to denote one's manner of life or habitual conduct. All 13 New Testament occurrences carry this ethical sense, describing how a person lives before God and others. Paul uses it to recall his former life in Judaism (Gal 1:13); Peter urges wives to win husbands through their pure conduct (1 Pet 3:1-2); Hebrews commends leaders whose outcome of life is worth imitating (Heb 13:7). The term always implies observable, sustained behavior rather than a single act. Spanish 'conducta,' French 'conduite,' and German 'Wandel' all capture this pattern-of-life meaning with remarkable consistency.
