field, piece of land; fields, countryside, rural area
1. field, piece of land A cultivated or uncultivated piece of land, a plot or farm, used in singular for a specific tract of ground. Prominent in Jesus' parables: the field with treasure (Matt 13:44), the field of wheat and tares (Matt 13:24-38), the potter's field (Matt 27:7-8), and the field in which one works (Matt 24:18,40; Luke 15:15). All languages translate uniformly: Arabic haql (حَقْل), German Acker, French champ, Korean bat (밭), Hindi khet (खेत), Spanish campo. Hebrew equivalent is sadeh (שָׂדֶה). The singular form always denotes a specific, bounded piece of agricultural or open land. 25×

2. fields, countryside, rural area Plural form denoting open rural land, the surrounding countryside as opposed to a town or city. Used when disciples are sent to buy food from surrounding fields (Mark 6:36,56), the prodigal son's employer's fields (Luke 15:15), and in promises of receiving 'fields' as reward (Mark 10:29-30). In Luke 9:12 English specifically glosses 'countryside' and Korean renders sigol (시골, 'rural area'), showing the broader geographic sense rather than individual plots. Arabic huqul (حُقُول, plural), Spanish campos, Hindi kheton (खेतों, plural). Mark 15:21 uses genitive singular as 'coming from the country' (apo agrou), with English glossing 'the country' and Korean bat-eseo (밤에서). Mark 16:12 similarly has 'countryside' in English and sigol in Korean. These plural and rural-area uses represent the broader geographic extension of the singular agricultural sense. 12×
