II. אוּלַי44 and (Gn 24:39) אֻלַי adv. (perhaps from אוֹ & לַי = לֵי, לֵא, as in לוּלֵא, = or not?) 1. peradventure, perhaps; usually expressing a hope, as Gn 16:2 Nu 22:6, 11; 23:3 1 S 6:5 Je 20:10; but also a fear or doubt, as Gn 27:12 Jb 1:5, sq. לֹא Gn 24:5, 39; in mockery Is 47:12; Je 51:8. 2. followed by another clause ἀσυνδέτως, it expresses virtually the protasis = if peradventure Gn 18:24, 28 (cf. v 29–32) Ho 8:7 the blade shall yield no meal; אוּלַי יַעֲשֶׂה זָרִים יִבְלָעֻהוּ if perchance it yield strangers shall swallow it up. 3. in Nu 22:33 לוּלֵי (q.v.) must be read; unless she had turned aside from me, surely, etc.

Köii. 333), conj. if, O that:— 1. if (stating a case which has not been, or is not likely to be, realized): a. sq. pf. (so mostly), Dt 32:29 לו חכמו ישׂכילו זאת if they had been wise (which they are not), they would understand this; Mi 2:11 (apod. וְהָיָה); Ju 8:19; 13:23 לו חפץ י׳ להמיתנו לא לקח if J. had desired to slay us, he would not have taken, &c. 1 S 14:30 2 S 19:7. b. sq. impf. ἆρᾰ, interrogative Particle, implying anxiety or impatience, = Epic dialect and Lyric poetry ἦ ῥα: __1 alone, it simply marks the question, the nature of which is determined by the context: e.g. in Refs 4th c.BC+ a negative answer is implied in the question ἆρ᾽ ἂν οἴεσθε..; but an affirmative in Refs 5th c.BC+ ἆ. βέβληκα δὶς ἐφεξῆ; compare ἆρ᾽ εὐτυχεῖς.. ἢ δυστυχεῖ; Refs 5th c.BC+; and to make it plainly affirmative, ἆρ᾽ ο; ἆρ᾽ οὐχ; Refs 5th c.BC+; ἆρ᾽ οὐχ οὕτω; Refs 5th c.BC+ __2 ἆ. οὖ; is used to draw an affirmative inference, Refs; also when a negative answer is expected, Refs; with a negative, ἆρ᾽ οὖν οὐ..; Refs __3 in ἆρά γε, each Particle retains its force, γε serving to make the question more definite, Refs 5th c.BC+ __4 less frequently with τίς interrogative, τίνος ποτ᾽ ἆρ᾽ ἔπραξε χειρίRefs 5th c.BC+; τίδ᾽ ἆρ᾽ ἐγὼ σ; Refs 5th c.BC+; with ἤν, Refs 5th c.BC+ __5 in indirect questions, σκεψώμεθα τοῦτο ἆ...
