Gn 15:10 part, piece. 1. בִּתְרוֹ Gn 15:10; pl. sf. בְּתָרָיו Je 34:18, בִּתְרֵי הָעֵגֶל Je 34:19; always of halves of animals cut in two in making covenants. 2. הָרֵי בָּ֑תֶר Ct 2:17 mountains of cutting, i.e. cleft mountains 𝔊 Thes al.; or of separation (between us) Ew al.; according to We Prol. 415, Eng. † [חֵסְפַּס] vb. only Pt. pass. (scaled off) scale-like (appar. redupl. from חסף for חספסף, v. Ew§ 158 c Ol§§ 214, 276 Ges§ 55, 6 Sta§ 291; Kö i, 250 thinks euphon. for מְחֻסְפָּף; to be comp. are Arabic خَشِفَ, have scab, itch (Frey; but ش = ס?); Aramaic חַסְפָּא potsherd, חַסְפְּנִיתָא scale (of fish), scurf; Ethiopic ኀሠፈ scabiosus fuit Di 587 and Ex 16:14)—hence מְחֻסְפָּס scaled off, scale-like, as 𝔖 𝔗 Thes RobGes MV SS VB;—of the manna דַּק מְחֻסְפָּ֔ס דַּק כַּכְּפֹר Ex 16:14 a fine, scalelike thing, fine as the hoar-frost.

† II. קֶ֫צֶף n.[m.] prob. splinter;—only כְּק׳ עַל־פְּנֵי־מָ֑יִם Ho 10:7 (sim. of helpless king).

† קְצָפָה n.f. a snapping or splintering (on abstr. formation v. BaNB 87);—Jo 1:7 (of fig-tree; ‖ שַׁמָּה).

† [רַץ] n.[m.] usually piece, bar (?), in phr. מִתְרַפֵּס בְּרַצֵּי כָ֑סֶף ψ 68:31, but very obscure and dub.; Aq. 𝔙 wheels; 𝔊 Symm צְרֻפֵי; Che בְּבִצְרֵי כסף, or בְּבֶצַע כ׳, or (JBL xi (1892), 125) בְּרֹצֵי כ׳ (i.e. mercenaries); Pott We בְּרֹצֵי כָזָב; Du בְּרֹצֵי סִפְּךָ.

† שְׁבָבִים n.[m.]pl. probably splinters;—שׁ׳ יִהְיֶה עֵגֶל שֹׁמְרוֹן Ho 8:6 (cf. We; Vrss appar. conjecture).
